The Vice President reports to the President and CEO, and serves as an integral member of the senior management team. The VP is responsible for the development of a communication strategy that highlights the impact that high-performing charter schools can in improving public education and NAPCS?s role in shaping that impact. This entrepreneurial leader will develop, integrate, and implement a broad range of public relations activities. The VP will drive NAPCS?s media relations activity and message development initiatives. The selected candidate will be responsible for oversight of all communications related products, including, but not limited to: web development, publications, e-news blasts, media and public relations, and marketing.
The Vice President, Communications and Marketing will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following activities:
Communications Strategy
- The VP will develop a communications and marketing plan that advances public understanding of charter schools and establishes NAPCS as a national leader in the education reform movement. The plan must address activities that promote, enhance and protect NAPCS?s reputation as an advocate for the public charter education sector.
- Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the charter sector. Work with the leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate public relations strategies to support them.
- Develop an arsenal of evidence based messaging on the commonly cited myths plaguing the charter sector like coaching out of special education children, creaming and re-segregation; establish effective dissemination strategies to key audiences to re-frame the debate.
- Create a powerful network with state charter organizations to convey the real experiences of charter students, parents, and operators while aligning state communications activities to a broader national agenda.
- Provide strategic communications leadership to the federal and state policy teams, working closely on the development of all issue specific messaging, and serving as the spokesperson of the message where appropriate.
- Oversee all communications related products, including, but not limited to: web development, newsletters, other print publications, e-news blasts, media and public relations, and marketing.
- Serve as the lead point person on media interactions; working deliberately to position NAPCS, its President and CEO and the charter school movement in a positive light.
- Actively engage, cultivate, and manage press relationships to ensure coverage surrounding NAPCS and sector wide programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects
- Serve as the chief communications liaison and advisor to the President and CEO.
Team Development and Management
- Recruit and manage a small communications team to support the development and execution of the communications strategy.
- Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications team(which includes research and national conference staff) including budgeting, planning and staff development
- Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
- Bachelor?s degree in journalism, communications, or related field is required, an advanced degree is preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in a senior management role either in-house or with an agency.
- Successful writing and editing experience (externally focused) across a variety of print and online communications media.
- Demonstrated leadership in managing a comprehensive strategic communications, media relations, and marketing program to advance an organization?s mission and goals.
- Committed to leveraging offline and online media technologies to reach communications objectives.
- Energetic, flexible, collaborative and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical finance, and administration initiatives.
- Passion for education reform and the public charter school movement.
