Matt Riddle cut from the UFC after second positive test for marijuana

Last week, Matt Riddle talked about how he mended fences with UFC brass over his positive test for marijuana. This week? He tested positive again and lost his job. According to MMA Junkie, Riddle tested positive for marijuana after his UFC on Fuel 7 bout with Che Mills, and was then cut from the UFC. Riddle also tested positive at UFC 149.

While it's true that Riddle has a medical marijuana card in Nevada, he knew full well that the UFC tested for the drug. Whether that drug should be banned is not the point. It is, Riddle knows it's banned, and Riddle broke the rules.

If your boss banned red shirts for no reason at all and you were suspended for wearing your favorite red shirt to work, are you going to wear it again? Yes, you can talk about how your boss is crazy for banning red shirts and work to change his mind on red shirts, but you can't wear the shirt and expect to slide by.

It's also important for UFC fighters to walk the line these days as the promotion looks to trim their roster. UFC president Dana White recently noted that they have approximately 100 fighters to trim from their roster. Riddle made it too easy for them to pick his name.

UPDATE: The UFC released a statement on Riddle's release, which reads in full:

Matthew Riddle tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his bout at UFC on FUEL TV 7 in London, England on February 16, 2013. This is Riddle?s second failed drug test for marijuana within the past seven months. Riddle previously failed a post-fight drug test due to marijuana following his UFC 149 victory over Chris Clements.

As such, the UFC organization is exercising its right to terminate Riddle for breach of his obligations under his Promotional Agreement as well as the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy. The UFC organization has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents. The outcome of the bout against Che Mills was changed to a no contest and the results of the positive test will be reported to the official Association of Boxing Commissions MMA record-keeper.

Breakthrough in sight for cataract treatment

Feb. 28, 2013 ? A professor at London's Kingston University has made a discovery about the shape of the eye that could boost the effectiveness of human-made lenses used in cataract operations.

Research carried out by Professor Barbara Pierscionek and a team of fellow vision experts suggests that the way proteins are distributed in the lens of the eye may cause its gradient to be stepped rather than smooth as previously thought. The finding could give a new insight into the way the eye grows and lead to major improvements in synthetic lenses used in surgery to treat patients who have developed cataracts.

Artificial replacements did not currently match the quality of real ones, Professor Pierscionek said. "However this research could help give patients better vision if manufacturers use it to develop an improved lens able to change focus," she explained.

Professor Pierscionek, the Associate Dean of Research and Enterprise at Kingston's Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing, has devoted two decades to researching the eye's lens. Her work has explored its biochemical, optical and mechanical properties. Since the lens is one of the few organs in the body that does not replenish itself, it is a model for aging. "The lens is the key to a lot of things -- we just haven't unlocked its full potential yet. It has the capacity to tell us what has happened to a person throughout their life and their disease state," Professor Pierscionek said.

Cataracts can occur at any age, but often develop as people get older. In the United Kingdom, an estimated one in three people over the age of 65 is affected. Smoking and UV radiation are thought to be causes and they can also occur in people with diseases such as diabetes. The condition may gradually make vision more blurred and make it difficult to see in poor light. Treatment usually involves replacing the affected lens with an artificial one.

Professor Pierscionek carried out much of her most recent research at Japan's Spring-8 synchrotron facility -- home of the world's largest third generation synchrotron. It accelerates electrons close to the speed of light to generate X-rays and other beams. The electrons are injected into a storage ring 1.4km in diameter, with the resultant X-rays fed into experimental stations dotted around the site. "These X-rays can penetrate parts of the body and soft tissue better than other forms of radiation," Professor Pierscionek said. "This allows engineers and scientists to look deeply into anything from metal to bacteria." When taking measurements it was important to keep the sample as close as possible to its natural state, Professor Pierscionek said. "The synchrotron is so sophisticated that it allows us to measure the lenses while they are still in the eyeball."

Some of the research has been conducted in collaboration with scientists from the Spring-8 facility and Cardiff University. It is being funded by eye research charity Fight for Sight as well as grants from Spring-8, which has provided use of the synchrotron.

Further analysis is now being carried out in laboratories at Kingston University. Professor Pierscionek and her team are working with Dr Mehdi Bahram, a researcher funded by Fight for Sight, using ray tracing and mathematical modelling. The work involves projecting lasers of different colours through different parts of the lens to trace their paths. The information will then be used to help develop lenses with improved optical quality.

Businesses Have Something to Learn from Internet Marketers

For some of us the words ?online marketer? makes us want to throw up in our mouth a little. Why? Because most people think of online marketers as those people who trick you into giving them your email address so they can spam you with crappy offers for things you don?t want. I?ve certainly run into my share of these. But here?s the reality. Love ?Em or Hate ?Em, we all have something to learn from online marketers.

Internet Marketers are Master Email List Builders

Online marketers know most people don?t buy on their first visit to the website. So what do they do? They give you an amazing piece of content you really want in exchange for your email address. In fact, the best internet marketers don?t even try to sell you on their primary website pages. They work really hard to capture your email address because the goal is to build a marketable database that can be leveraged to drive revenue.

This topic is top of mind because I recently had an experience with an internet marketer through my son who wanted to learn how to master talking to girls. I know you?re probably giggling a little, but he?s a little shy and he wanted to build his confidence. I?m all about building my son?s confidence so I agreed. What I didn?t expect was how impressed I would be by the marketing that followed. What I saw quickly became one of my personal favorite examples of solid list building and follow up marketing. To illustrate, I?ll share the site my son found, Double Your Dating, run by David Deangelo aka Eben Pagen. Now, I?m not sure why Eben chose to use an alias for himself on this website, maybe it?s because he didn?t want the girls he was attracting to know he sold tips for others to do the same, maybe it?s because he didn?t want his friends and family to find out, or maybe it?s because he?s a scam artist. I don?t know. But what I do know is Eben is a smart marketer. And business marketers can learn a lot from this approach to selling online.

Take a look at his home page below.? What do you see? A HUGE arrow that you can?t ignore pointing to his opt-in box.

What does your opt-in box look like? How noticeable is it? Does it say ?sign up for our newsletter? with a form??

?Here?s a tip. Signing up for a newsletter is a huge red flag that says, ?SIGN UP AND LET ME SPAM YOU WITH STUFF YOU DON?T CARE ABOUT.? People don?t sign up for ?newsletters? anymore, especially business newsletters, so you are going to have to get more creative if you want to build your email database.

Internet Marketers Understand the Power of FREE Content

offer the visitor something free in exchange for an email address

Eben uses several interesting content offers in exchange for your email address. My personal favorite is ?an easy, effective way to tell if she?s ready to be kissed so you won?t get rejected.? Seriously, you know you want to go and put in your email address just to find out what he recommended. As a woman I can say it was brilliant, by the way! He also offers an exclusive report, scripts and a ton of stuff for someone who really wants to figure out how to attract women. And all of it is free. This page is designed to trigger on the emotional needs for the product the website sells. It doesn?t mention that he?s selling a product; rather it offers the visitor something free in exchange for an email address. And here?s some inside information. The stuff he offers here isn?t good, it?s AMAZING! My son poured over every piece and even brought them to the dinner table to ask me if I thought they were good recommendations. Guess what, they weren?t just good tips, they were brilliant tips that would actually work and help my son build his confidence without risking rejection.

Do you offer content in exchange for an email sign up? If you had to rate your content on a scale from 1 (crap) to 10 (Holy Sh!t That?s Amazing), where would it fall?

Internet Marketers Understand the Power of Trust

The other thing I want to highlight is the video Eben recorded for this page. Clearly, he knew he needed to build trust and credibility with his potential buyers and he knew video was the way to do it. You can see his confident but not cocky demeanor; hear why he created the program and what the result was for him. And honestly, he does it all without ever making it sound like a sales pitch. It?s brilliant. Now, he also understands things like production value and lighting so it looks professional. After all, at the end of all of this, he does have something to sell, if you?re interested. I would embed the video here for you, but the only place you can get it is on his website. ?But feel free to check it out here.

Would you trust your company after watching the videos on your website? How are you building trust?

Internet Marketers Understand the Power of Passive Income

Internet Marketers do significant testing before they build their products so they don?t waste time

The beauty of the entire Double Your Dating series is that it is a product Eben developed years ago. And it continues to earn money today with little to no effort from Eben. In fact, he?s on to new things and has launched several other products since this one. The goal was to put forth a lot of effort in the beginning to build something great and then to let it continue to sell itself.

Now one of the secrets is that Internet Marketers do significant testing before they build their products so they don?t waste time. They test whether or not the market wants them, how much they will pay for them and even test each product before they sell it. It?s not easy, but as you can see it?s the gift that keeps giving.

Does your business have an offering that generates passive income for the company? Is there a new online product that could be developed to start one? Is there value in making money when you sleep? Heck yeah!

Internet Marketers Understand the Power of Affiliate Marketing

The beauty of products that are complete is that the cost to create them is a sunk cost. The value in selling them through third parties and paying a hefty commission for those sales is extremely high. Most Internet Marketers I?ve seen spend a lot of time recruiting affiliates to help sell their products. They pay them really well to make it worth their time. They provide them with all of the tools they need to sell them. And they rely on affiliates with large email lists, not heavy web traffic. Why? Because email is where the magic happens.

Does your company use affiliates to sell their products? Would an affiliate network attract a valuable market your company wouldn?t otherwise reach? Would affiliates help get a new product to market faster?

Internet Marketers Use Email Marketing to Convert Sales

At the end of the day, it is the automated email campaigns on the back of this that walk the buyer through the emotional triggers, objections and increasing offers that lead to a sale. The email campaigns are smart. They offer you a ton of information. Each email is valuable (if you really are interested in the product they offer) and ultimately you can choose to keep getting the free advice or you can buy the product and take it a level further. Plus, if you don?t buy their product, internet marketers offer you other types of products you could be interested in through companies that they are affiliate marketers for. This is where Internet Marketers get a bad rap.

Here?s the big difference in what they do versus what companies do. They don?t use heavy HTML design and many don?t use any. They use an email that actually contains an ?email? that is written like a human on the other end wrote it. It contains links to resources, which I?m sure are all tracked making it technically an ?HTML? email, but there aren?t crappy graphics all over the place. It is personable communication that draws you into the story the email is telling.

Other marketers feel this is spamming their audience, tricking them, and that it isn?t an authentic way to market.

But I?ll say this. When my son signed up for the tips from Double Your Dating, I had no doubt we would receive offers to buy the other products. But my son and I enjoyed the free tips so it was worth it. At some point, we were convinced that this was something we wanted and we did buy it. I didn?t feel like I was tricked. I knew what I was getting into, maybe it?s because I?m a marketer. But, hey, anyone who doesn?t like it can unsubscribe and never think about it again.

What do your emails look like? Is HTML causing your audience to categorize your emails as spam? Are you continuing the story in email or are you over-selling, over-offering, over-discounting?

So at the end of the day, like ?em or hate ?em, I think we all have a thing or two to learn from internet marketers. And you probably don?t even realize how many you are already following. I know we are evaluating Social Media Explorer to see how we can take some of these lessons to heart.

What do you think? Are Internet Marketers smart or evil? Would any of the lessons help your business? Leave a comment and join the discussion.

Want to see some internet marketers in action? Check out Jeff Walker, Frank Kern, Amy Porterfield, Mari Smith and Social Media Examiner. All of these may sell different things, but they are all smart internet marketers.

LA Kings trade Simon Gagne back to Philadelphia

The Los Angeles Kings traded Simon Gagne back to the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday for a conditional draft pick, sending the struggling left wing back to the city where he had his greatest NHL success.

Gagne spent his first 10 NHL seasons with the Flyers, but won his first Stanley Cup title last season in Los Angeles after a late-playoff return from a concussion. He hasn't scored a goal in 11 games this season for the Kings, who decided the veteran didn't fit in coach Darryl Sutter's system.

Before Gagne even got up the nerve to ask for a trade, Kings general manager Dean Lombardi sent him back to Philadelphia.

"They just did it on their own," Gagne said. "It just shows you the class those guys have. Even if it's hard getting traded in the middle of the season, going to Philly ? and they told me it was the best place for me to go ? they're really gentlemen to do that to me this year."

Los Angeles will get a third-round pick if Philadelphia makes the playoffs or a fourth-round pick if the Flyers miss the postseason.

Gagne had 259 goals and 524 points in his decade with the Flyers, who traded him to Tampa Bay in July 2010 partly to get under the salary cap. The Kings signed him a year later, but Gagne has scored just 24 goals in 108 games since leaving Philadelphia.

"This is a good player that I've known a long time, and I know that if he would have wanted to go anywhere, that would be the place he wanted to go," said Kings general manager Dean Lombardi, a former Flyers scout. "Given that we had to do this, if we can, I would certainly put him someplace I know he'd be happy."

Gagne scored a career-high 47 goals during the 2005-06 season while playing mostly on a line with Peter Forsberg and Mike Knuble, who re-signed with Philadelphia last month. Before the lockout last July, the Flyers re-signed Ruslan Fedotenko, who began his career alongside Gagne with the Flyers more than a decade ago.

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren spoke with Lombardi a few days ago about Gagne, but suddenly had urgency to add front-line depth. Matt Read is sidelined for six weeks with torn ribcage muscles, and Tye McGinn will be out for a few weeks after breaking an orbital bone in a fight with Toronto's Matt Brown on Monday night.

"He improves our depth up front automatically," said Holmgren, who traded Gagne three years ago. "He is a good two-way player that can skate. ... Coaches have watched tape of him playing, so we feel comfortable that he is fine. He seems excited to be coming back, and looks forward to an opportunity to play and help us."

The seven-time 20-goal scorer was sidelined for more than five months of his first season in Los Angeles with his latest concussion, but returned to action in the Stanley Cup finals. He played four games while winning his first NHL championship, but underwent neck surgery five days after raising the Cup for the first time.

Gagne's ice time was down sharply this season, and he had been a healthy scratch recently for the Kings (9-6-2), who have won four straight after a slow start. Gagne had five assists this season, but lost playing time recently to fellow veteran Dustin Penner.

Gagne only recently pulled up some of his Philly roots. Flyers coach Peter Laviolette has been renting Gagne's old house in Philadelphia's New Jersey suburbs for the past 2? years ? but Gagne recently sold the house, with the closing scheduled for March 15.

While Los Angeles only recently started clicking after a slow start, Philadelphia is off to just a 9-11-1 start despite scoring 60 goals, third-most in the Eastern Conference.

Gagne has a $3.5 million salary for the season and will be a free agent this summer, but Holmgren said the Flyers could afford him after losing players to injury.

Brady's reworked deal helps Patriots

So Tom Brady got a contract extension. Big deal.

Well, yeah ? for the three-time Super Bowl winner and for the Patriots.

There's nothing unusual about one of the game's best quarterbacks and leaders being coveted by his team. Or being rewarded.

What's rare is how well the three-year extension works for both Brady and for New England.

The two-time NFL Most Valuable Player did not really take a pay cut with this new deal. It might sound that way with salaries of $7 million in 2015, $8 million the next year and $9 million in 2017, far below the going rate for superstar QBs.

But Brady gets a $30 million signing bonus and $57 million overall in a contract that will run through the 2017 season. And New England gets space under the salary cap to spend on top free agents.

Copyright Alert System gets started, ISPs ready to lay the smack down on P2P piracy

DNP Copyright Alert System now up and running, ISPs ready to lay the smack down P2P piracy

The fight against online piracy just gained a new weapon in the form of the Copyright Alert System (CAS) aka the "six strikes" policy. Starting today, participating ISPs like Verizon, Time Warner Cable, AT&T and Comcast will begin issuing warnings to customers suspected of using illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing services that violate copyright laws. Initial notifications will be used to educate and direct customers to legal alternative content sources. If the first set of notifications go avoided, the ISP may take further action, which includes: throttling internet connection speeds and redirecting users to websites requiring acknowledgment of CAS alerts.

If a person wishes to contest their ISP's findings, they will have 14 calendar days to request an independent review by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) for a fee of $35. If the investigation finds that no copyright violations have taken place, the alerts will be removed from the customer's account and they will receive a refund for the filing fee. However, should the organization's research rule otherwise, the internet service provider may proceed with taking action against its account holder. To get a closer look at the CAS and its inner workings, "redirect" your browser to the source links below.

China takes steps to clean up 'cancer villages'

The Chinese government has acknowledged the existence of "cancer villages": areas where rates of cancer are unusually high, probably because of industrial and agricultural contamination of drinking and irrigation water.

The reference to the cancer clusters was in China's first ever five-year plan for environmental management of chemicals, released on 20 February. The Chinese media, translating parts of the report, said it links water pollution to "serious cases of health and social problems like the emergence of cancer villages in individual regions".

The term has caught on over the past few years as the media in China and elsewhere reported on apparent cancer hotspots. It gained prominence in 2009 when a journalist plotted 40 of them on a Google Map. Some reports have suggested there might be more than 450 such clusters.

According to recent data, deaths from cancer in China increased by 80 per cent between 1970 and 2004. The disease now accounts for 25 per cent of deaths in cities and 21 per cent in rural areas. However, people in China have an 18.9 per cent risk of getting cancer before the age of 75, compared with 29.9 per cent for people in the US and 26.3 per cent in the UK.

One "typical cancer village", as it was called by researchers from Dezhou University in Shandong province who studied it in 2008, had between 80 and 100 deaths from cancer over five years in a population of only 1200.

But proving a link between pollution and cancer requires more detailed evidence, says Tim Driscoll, an epidemiologist at the University of Sydney and science adviser to Cancer Council Australia. However, Driscoll also says it doesn't really matter ? if there is dangerous pollution anywhere, it should be cleaned up.

And that is the plan. China's Ministry for Environmental Protection has drawn up a list of 58 chemicals that will be tracked with a registry, including known and suspected carcinogens and endocrine disrupters. Before the end of the 2015, they will subdivide the list into chemicals to be eliminated and those to be reduced.

Big shift

Creating a plan to eliminate some chemicals is a big shift, says Yixiu Wu, a Greenpeace East Asia campaigner based in Beijing, who says even committing to controlling these chemicals would have been a step forward.

The ministry's acknowledgement of the problem is "really important and it is another reflection of the government's shift towards more transparency in pollution information," says Sabrina Orlins from the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs, a non-profit body in Beijing.

"Increased environmental information leads to increased public awareness where people can have the chance to exert pressure on big water polluters to adopt clean-up measures and be more accountable," she says.

That accountability is where the five-year plan is lacking, says Wu. "It is still a question whether the government is willing to release all the information about the factory locations and their environmental risk," she says. "It is very important for people who are living nearby."

Wu says the motivation to develop the plan comes from an increasing awareness of the human cost of pollution as well as the country signing up to several international conventions designed to curb pollution.

Asian stocks fall amid unease about US budget

BEIJING (AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Tuesday amid anxiety about impending U.S. government spending cuts and the uncertain outcome of Italy's general election.

Oil dropped below $93 a barrel on concern about possible setbacks in all the major economic regions.

Japan's Nikkei 225 shed 1.4 percent to 11,502.30 while China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index added 0.2 percent to 2,329.07. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.6 percent to 22,693.86 and Taipei, Seoul and Sydney also suffered declines.

Investors were spooked by the specter of automatic U.S. spending cuts that hit this week and political instability in Italy following a general election.

In Asia, Chinese markets have drifted after Beijing ordered new efforts to cool housing prices, prompting fears of tighter monetary policy that might slow a gradual economic recovery. Investors also were dismayed by a survey that showed February factory activity slowing.

"As all three major economic areas face uncertainty, risk aversion has returned," said Credit Agricole CIB economist Dariusz Kowalczyk in a report.

Markets were volatile Monday amid uncertainty about the outcome of Italy's election. Exit polls suggested a center-left coalition might be able to form a government. But later polls showed a center-right group led by former Premier Silvio Berlusconi might win control of the upper house ? a scenario that might produce political deadlock and force new elections.

Berlusconi has promised to roll back some of the austerity measures introduced by technocrat prime minister Mario Monti. Heavily indebted Italy's stability is considered crucial to the future of the euro currency bloc and European leaders want Rome to enforce Monti's spending controls.

On Wall Street, the Dow fell 216.40 points, or 1.6 percent, to 13,784.17, its biggest drop since Nov. 7. The S&P 500 fell 27.75 points, or 1.8 percent, to 1,487.85, falling below 1,500 for the first time in three weeks. The Nasdaq composite dropped 45.57 points, or 1.4 percent, to 3,116.25

In China, investors were dismayed when HSBC Corp. said Monday a preliminary version of its purchasing managers index showed Chinese manufacturing unexpectedly fell in February to a four-month low and export orders declined.

China is recovering from its deepest slowdown since the 2008 but analysts say the rebound will be gradual and could be jeopardized if trade or investment falls.

Investors also are awaiting new U.S. data and remarks by Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke.

Last week, minutes from the Fed's latest policy meeting showed concern over monetary stimulus, stoking jitters in the markets.

In currency markets, the dollar weakened to 92.55 yen from the previous day's 92.59.

The yen has fallen by about 20 percent in recent weeks, helping to boost the Nikkei on hopes of stronger exports.

Benchmark crude for April delivery was down 57 cents to $92.54 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract settled Monday at $93.11.

Spotify gets Ford SYNC AppLink compatible, streams of 'Radar Love' set to skyrocket

Image

Well, this was a long time coming. Spotify's upping it car compatibility by bringing its streaming services to Ford's Sync AppLink. The voice controlled version of the app lets users perform the standard array of controls sans-hands, including play, skip, et al. More interesting are the Spotify-tailored features, like starring tracks, getting details about a song, adding to a roadtrip playlist and received shared tracks while your eyes are on the while. The updated app is "coming soon" for iOS, according to Spotify, and the service is also set to be the first music streamer for Sync AppLink's European launch.

Firefox Smartphones Coming Soon - Business Insider

ZTE

ZTE Firefox OS smartphone

Mozilla today announced big progress with its new smartphone operating system.

We've been hearing dribbles and drabs about Firefox OS all year long. It will launch first in Europe but Mozilla also announced that Sprint has signed on.

That's the first U.S. carrier.

The European carriers will be selling it starting in mid-2013. Manufacturers of the phones so far include Alcatel, LG and ZTE, Huawei.

U.S. users can get their hands on the OS by installing it on an Android phone. Plus, a company called Geeksphone makes the device.

The Verge's Chris Ziegler, who was living blogging today's press conference at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, wasn't too impressed with the ZTE Open. He called it "an extremely low-end device."

Quality aside, this is an interesting experiment by Mozilla. This smartphone OS is built entirely from Web standards, like HTML5, and "free from the rules and restrictions of existing proprietary platforms," Mozilla says.

All told Mozilla announced 18 mobile operator partners in nine countries.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The young Oscar-nominated star of "Beasts of the Southern Wild" has been cast in the lead role of a new version of "Annie."

Sony Pictures announced Sunday that Quvenzhane (kwuh-VEHN'-juh-nay) Wallis will play Annie in a contemporized adaptation of the Broadway musical and the "Little Orphan Annie" comic strip. It's to be directed by Will Gluck, who loosely based his 2010 film "Easy A" on "The Scarlet Letter."

The 9-year-old Quvenzhane is one of the youngest Oscar-nominated actors ever. She's also shot a small role in Steve McQueen's upcoming film, "Twelve Years a Slave."

"Annie" is planned for release during the 2014 holiday season. Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jay-Z are among the producers. The Smiths' daughter, Willow, had originally been slated to play Annie.

Genetically modified foods: Who has to tell?

Consumers who believe they have a right to know whether their food contains genetically modified ingredients are pressing lawmakers, regulators and voters to require labels on altered foods. But even if they succeed, experts say there's no guarantee that labels identifying genetically engineered foods would ever appear on packages.

"People are usually surprised to learn that there is no legal right to know," said Michael Rodemeyer, an expert on biotechnology policy at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

A variety of rules and regulations control the words that appear on food packages. Such rules must be balanced against companies' constitutionally protected right of commercial speech, experts said.

"It's an unsettled area in the law," said Hank Greely, director of the Stanford Center for Law and the Biosciences in Palo Alto. "If I were a betting man, I think the odds are good that the Supreme Court would ... strike down a GMO labeling requirement."

Consumers do have the right to know some things about foods, and it's the job of the Food and Drug Administration to enforce the various rules. Labels must carry an accurate name for the food, as well as its weight and manufacturer, a list of ingredients and, since 1990, that panel of calories and breakdown of basic nutrients that some people pore over and others blithely ignore.

And labels cannot be false or misleading. Consumers have a right to know that a product contains the nutrients they'd reasonably expect to find in a food with that name: An orange lacking vitamin C (should anyone desire to create such a thing) would have to be labeled as such.

They also have the right to know when a food contains something new that makes it materially different, such as an allergen or unexpected nutrient. Soybean varieties that are genetically engineered to contain high amounts of the monounsaturated fat oleic acid must bear labels that make that property clear, said FDA spokesperson Morgan Liscinsky.

But there is no requirement that food producers use those labels to say how they raised those oleic acid levels, according to the FDA. They could have done it through conventional breeding or by irradiating plant tissue to create mutations or by fusing cells together in a dish ? or with genetic engineering.

When Flavr Savr tomatoes became the first genetically modified plants sold in supermarkets in 1994, they had stickers that informed shoppers that they were "made from genetically engineered seeds." Calgene Inc., the company that produced the tomatoes, even provided brochures and a toll-free number that consumers could call to learn more about the product, said Belinda Martineau, a geneticist at UC Davis who worked at Calgene in the 1990s.

But those labels were there only because Calgene decided to put them there. The FDA had scrutinized the process by which the company engineered the DNA in the tomatoes and decided that the technology itself didn't amount to a material change. Regulators concluded that Flavr Savr had the appearance, nutrients, flavor and texture of a tomato (although not, as it turned out, an especially tasty one).

"It was still a tomato," said Fred Degnan, a food lawyer with the firm King & Spalding in Washington, D.C., who has worked on biotechnology and labeling issues at the FDA. "They couldn't require it to be labeled in a way that implied it was different from a regular tomato."

Courts have ruled that forcing companies to label GM products violates their 1st Amendment right of free speech. In a 1996 case, a federal appeals court blocked a Vermont law that required dairy producers to label milk from cows that had been treated with a growth hormone made by genetically engineered bacteria. The hormone helped cows produce more milk, but the milk itself was the same as milk from untreated cows, the FDA determined. Because the law required labels to contain information that wasn't "material" to the product, it was unconstitutional, the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in a 2-1 decision.

Labels can be required only if they alert consumers to a change that affects a food's composition or nutrition, its physical properties (such as shelf life), or the qualities that influence the sensory experience of smelling, tasting and eating it, the FDA says.

It is not a definition that sits well with all.

Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of the Washington-based advocacy group Center for Food Safety, said that approach reflects "19th century science." His group has petitioned the FDA to update its rules so that any product created via genetic engineering would be considered altered enough to require a label.

Such a change would also give companies more leeway to label their products as free of genetically modified ingredients: Today they can do so only if the label doesn't imply that there's something wrong with GM foods or that GMO-free foods are superior (although many companies skirt the rules).

"We need to know we have an agency using 21st century regulations to deal with 21st century technology," Kimbrell said.

The FDA's stance on labeling genetically modified foods differs starkly from that of European regulators, who require foods with genetically engineered ingredients to bear labels. Most scientists believe that the FDA's approach is rational ? but perhaps it's too rational if the goal is to encourage public acceptance of the technology, said Jennifer Kuzma, a science policy expert at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.

"This is something that people want to see on labels," Kuzma said. "My view is that consumers deserve a choice when it comes to something that is important to them, even though there may not be a scientific basis for doing it."

Rodemeyer, the expert on biotechnology policy, says he thinks food producers made a tactical mistake by deciding not to label their genetically modified products voluntarily.

"When you don't label, you're always raising suspicion you're trying to hide something," he said.

Since most processed foods contain oil, sugar, syrups, emulsifiers, flour, cornmeal and protein that are derived from GM crops, virtually every product sold in the last 15 years would have carried a label. By now, those labels would have lost all meaning, Rodemeyer said: "If they would have all held their noses and jumped together, this wouldn't be an issue."

Liberal Watchdog Group: 'Fix The Debt' Movement More Astroturf Than Grassroots

The liberal watchdog group Center for Media and Democracy says Fix the Debt ? a key unit in philanthropist Pete Peterson's corps of organizations to battle the national debt ? is a pro-business effort masquerading as a grassroots movement.

In a conference call with reporters Friday, CMD director Lisa Graves called Fix the Debt "an Astroturf supergroup that is exceedingly well funded." The term "Astroturf" refers to groups that appear to be citizen-organized but actually have their roots at consultants' offices inside the Capital Beltway.

A spokesman for Fix the Debt hotly denies the charge. Jon Romano said the center got some of its facts wrong, adding, "It is unfortunate that some would rather cast aspersions and misrepresent this view than engage in a constructive conversation about tackling this very real problem. Demagoguing does nothing to protect the most vulnerable."

Fix the Debt is promoting a citizens' petition, with 346,000 names. CMD, which last year used leaked documents to report on the secretive American Legislative Exchange Council, traced the corporate ties and lobbying records of Fix the Debt leaders.

Among the co-founders, co-chairs and steering committee ? 13 people in all ? it found six who sit on corporate boards, including GE, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley; advisers to Goldman Sachs and the private equity firm KKR; and lobbyists for KKR, the Private Equity Growth Capital Council and U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Fix the Debt also has two well-populated advisory groups: a CEO council with about 90 members, and a Business Leaders Council of about 40.

"They really are posturing as a grassroots movement," says Graves. "They are putting forward this notion of these business leaders not as job creators, but as problem solvers on the economy ? when in fact the record shows that a lot of these companies are actively lobbying to keep tax loopholes open" and to promote other corporation-friendly policies.

CMD's analysis also appears in The Nation, in a package of stories on Peterson's long-running effort to move the national debt to the top of Washington's agenda.

Fact-check: Give these films Oscars for inaccuracy

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Many of this year's Oscar-nominated films are based on true stories ("Lincoln," "Zero Dark Thirty," "Argo") or on well-known novels ("Les Miserables," "Life of Pi"). And as you can imagine, it's easy for those stories to put a twist on a tale -- often intentionally, for drama's sake -- not telling it the way it was real life or in an earlier book.

Those changes mostly go unnoticed unless you're really familiar with the source material, but we found five notable ones.

Sony Pictures

The SEALs in "Zero Dark Thirty" made too much noise, says a man who should know.

1. Osama bin Laden raid was too noisy in 'Zero Dark Thirty'
Who can you believe about the death of Osama bin Laden if not the man who killed Osama bin Laden? That former Navy SEAL spoke to Esquire magazine and saw the movie for the first time with Phil Bronstein, who wrote the Esquire article. He pointed out some minor errors -- the dog on the real mission?was a Belgian Malinois, not a German Shepherd and the night-vision goggles worn by the SEALs in the film didn't exist when bin Laden was killed. But his biggest correction? The real SEALs went about their mission in silence. In the movie, a SEAL loudly yells "Breacher!" when he wants someone to blow a door at the compound, and characters call out bin Laden's name. In real life, the SEALs storming the Pakistan terrorist compound tried to keep as quiet as possible, for obvious reasons.

2. No one chased the plane onto the runway in 'Argo'
Kathleen Stafford, one of two women among the six Americans rescued from Iran in the events that inspired "Argo," told the Washington Post that the film Hollywooded up her actual experiences. "Argo" is full of fictionalized sections -- in real life, the six were split between two homes, not just the Canadian ambassador's, for one thing, and Canada's role is downplayed in the film in order to make the CIA look like more of a player. But perhaps the most dramatic scene in the film, where Iranian revolutionaries drive out on an airport runway chasing a departing plane just as it lifts off, never happened. Tony Mendez, the real CIA operative played by Ben Affleck, reports that the airport departure was "smooth as silk," with only a minor mechanical problem slightly delaying takeoff, not gun-waving revolutionaries.

Warner Bros.

"Argo" added drama to its airport scene.

3. Connecticut wasn't pro-slavery as shown in 'Lincoln'
Unless you live in the Nutmeg State, you probably didn't notice how Connecticut voted on the Thirteenth Amendment in the movie "Lincoln." But?Rep. Joe Courtney sure did. He wrote a letter to director Steven Spielberg complaining that two out of three Connecticut votes are seen being cast against abolishing slavery. In real history, all four votes from his state were pro-abolition. (The film's screenwriter?acknowledged?he changed the facts.) A Lincoln historian pointed out that the film actually got a lot of things right, including Lincoln's enjoyment of a certain bathroom joke. The historian's quibbles were minor: Mary Todd Lincoln's teeth were too white, the word "sniper" would not have been used, General Lee did not surrender from horseback, and Abe Lincoln didn't swear so much.

4. Was that song really in 'Les Mis'?
Fans of the "Les Miserables" musical know it backwards and forwards. They know what someone who's never seen "Les Mis" on stage wouldn't -- that the song "Suddenly," about Valjean's love for adopted daughter Cosette, isn't in the stage show. But that's hardly a goof, it's an intentional addition. Since it was an original piece for the film, "Suddenly" was the one song eligible to be nominated for a best original song Oscar. (We're guessing it will lose to Adele's "Skyfall.") Fans seem to like the new song. As theologian Mark Roberts points out, it's smartly written and the title?hearkens?back to a word in Victor Hugo's novel.

5. Samuel L. Jackson's favorite swear word didn't exist in 'Django' days
Much of the controversy surrounding "Django Unchained" was about its near-constant use of the n-word. But another term drew attention too. You know it: Starts with "mother," incorporates a famous f-word. Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Leonardo DiCaprio's creepy slave-hating slave Stephen, says it four times in "Django," but according to IMDb.com, that expression was unlikely to have been used until World War I. Mother--oh, never mind.

Weinstein Company

Samuel L. Jackson's favorite swear word wasn't around in slavery times.

Bridging Communication Boundaries Through a Common Vision ...

Refreshed conference format features joint Visionary Addresses and new tracks

SINGAPORE, 21 February 2013 - The much-anticipated annual conferences held at CommunicAsia, EnterpriseIT and BroadcastAsia are back in a new format with a joint visionary address and a cross-industry C-level panel discussion encompassing the ICT, broadcasting, pro-audio, film and TV industries. More than 210 global thought leaders will provide fresh insights on the dissolving boundaries in the field of communications, from 18 to 21 June 2013 at the Marina Bay Sands Singapore.

Joint Visionary Address Will Unveil a Meeting of Minds
For the first time, delegates from both the CommunicAsia2013 Summit and BroadcastAsia2013 International Conference will be participating in a two-part visionary address on 19 June 2013. The first is the Governmental Visionary Address by the Minister for Technology, State Government of Victoria, Australia, The Hon. Gordon Rich-Phillips. This is followed by the Industry Visionary Address by Mr. Karim Temsamani, Head of Asia Pacific, Google.

Titled ?ICT enabled Government ? a new approach to buying and using ICT from Victoria, Australia?, the Governmental Visionary Address will discuss how the Victorian Government, through its recently released ICT Strategy, sets out on its roadmap to deliver better services, reduce waste, encourage innovation and improve ICT procurement across government. This will also highlight the intention of the strategy to help align processes across departments and set clear lines of governance, accountability and direction.

The Industry Visionary Address will highlight how the Asian consumer is pushing the world?s Internet to new directions. Over the next few years, Asia can expect to see millions of new mobile Internet users enter this booming market. These new consumers will approach the Internet with different needs and expectations, compared to their Western counterparts 10 years ago.

Mr. Karim Temsamani, Head of Asia Pacific, Google says, "Asians are digitising their lives at a faster pace than people in almost any other region and most of the new users to join the Internet over the next decade will come from Asia. Asia already dominates the market for smartphones. The challenge is to look beyond devices to focus on how Asians are rebuilding their businesses, societies and cultures on the Internet in ways that were unimaginable just three years ago. The challenge for businesses is to anticipate and accelerate these changes in Asia, which is coming to define the global Internet."

Business Leaders to Discuss Technological Convergence Challenges Ahead
As the link between broadcast technologies and telecom technologies gets stronger, and the overlap of technologies more evident, CommunicAsia2013 Summit and BroadcastAsia2013 International Conference have conceptualised a joint panel discussion that will draw professionals from both industries. The ?Thought-Leaders Panel? of C-level executives will bring together telco companies like global satellite operator MEASAT, as well as broadcast companies like multi-media and content creator, Media Prima Berhad, to identify opportunities for collaboration between the telecom and broadcast industries.

?Over the years, we have been seeing more aggressive convergence between the telecom and broadcasting industries. We decided to hold a joint Visionary Address and ?Thought-Leaders Panel? this year to fulfil the need for a common platform for inter-industry discussion. These joint sessions will encourage industry think-tanks, service providers and content creators, to develop strategies to maximise reach and make business sense for both sides of the spectrum,? says Ms. Lindy Wee, Director, PR & Conferences, Singapore Exhibition Services.

CommunicAsia2013 Summit: The Next Wave: The Future is the Empowered Customer
The refreshed CommunicAsia2013 Summit will have eight key tracks ? each track kicks off with a panel discussion ? and two interactive workshops. Consumers have rapidly become the game-changers in the industry, with their accelerated demand for mobile data and services. The four-day programme will highlight the importance of understanding the customer so that businesses can be prepared to deliver a superior experience. More than 110 speakers will share their views and discuss critical issues affecting the ICT industry.

Some of the key confirmed speakers include Thomas Clayton, CEO & President of Bubble Motion, Marc Overton, Vice President of Wholesale and Machine-to-Machine from EE, Sandra De Zoysa, Group Chief Customer Officer of Dialog Telecom PLC, Nigel Bruin, Director, NBN Competence Center, Business Consulting of Huawei Singapore, Michael Thatcher, CTO ? Asia , International Organizations from Microsoft Public Sector, John Garrett, President of Carrier Services from Pacnet, Wu Choy Peng, Group CIO of SingTel, David Chalmers, Executive Director (Asia Pacific) of Tata Communications, Martijn Blanken, Executive Director of Telstra Global, Liu Yali, Executive Director of International Network Planning from Verizon and many others.

BroadcastAsia2013 International Conference: Enhancing User Experience, Monetising Content
The BroadcastAsia2013 International Conference progresses to the next level with four new tracks, four specialised sessions and for the first time, a half day workshop. This will focus on the shift in consumer demand for high quality content on-the-go, on multiple platforms and the emerging business opportunities for OTT in Asia. More than 100 speakers from 31 countries/regions will lead the numerous discussions over four days.

Some of the key confirmed speakers include, Peter Hutton, Managing Director of ESPN Star Sports, Dato Amrin Awaluddin, Group Managing Director, Media Prima Berhad, Graham Kill, CEO of Irdeto, Kurt Hoppe, Director of Smart TV Innovation of LG Electronics, Benjamin Grubbs, APAC Head of Partner Marketing of YouTube and Jay Fulcher, CEO of Ooyala.

Bringing Content to Life on Exhibition Showfloors
Content for both conferences has been carefully designed to complement the various technologies that will be showcased on the exhibition floors of CommunicAsia2013, EnterpriseIT and BroadcastAsia2013. Attendees will get to witness the latest services and solutions in broadband, cable, cloud, Interactive TV, mobile apps, OTT, satellite communications, multi-platform broadcasting, future TV, DVB-T2, professional audio technology, and more, Since the shows? inception, CommunicAsia, EnterpriseIT and BroadcastAsia have been running together and are widely acknowledged as one of the world?s leading technology showcases.

The Truth about Hyaluronic Acid | Gnet Health and Fitness

Not everyone may have heard of this clever little acid but in actual fact it can have a very big bearing on our lives in so many ways. It?s slowly coming to the fore for its health benefits but its also gaining popularity in the cosmetic industry as the latest must have treatment, even though more research still needs to be carried out.

You might be even more surprised to learn you have this substance in your own body working away happily day after day. So what is it? What does it do and how can it help us? Well, those questions and more will be answered in this article!

What Exactly Is It and What Does It Do?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance attaching itself to collagen and elastin to form cartilage! Yes ? your knees will be extremely happy now in most cases we hope! HA provides supplies of synovial which is needed in healthy joint lubrication, and to keep you mobile. It also keeps cartilage extremely flexible and strong. In actual fact HA is present in each and every tissue of the body carrying out some vital functions.

It assists the delivery of much needed nutrients and takes away toxins from cells that don?t have a supply of blood. The cartilage is a prime example of this and our joints will become brittle and weak without it. HA also helps enables water retention locking moisture into the space between each cell. This keeps collagen and elastin moist which in turn can promote a youthful appearance in the longer term.

Let?s compare the joints of the human body to working parts of a large machine? The joint fluid in the human body carries out the same function as the oil in the machinery. The Machine oil will need to be replaced because the heat and friction eventually breaks down the oils viscosity.

The oil thins to the extent it can?t protect the metal surfaces from wear and tear. If no fresh lubrication is forthcoming then the machinery will eventually seize. Hyaluronic acid assists the joints of the body in the same way. As we get older the effects of the joint fluid lessens. HA helps to maintain normal cushioning.

Did you know? Large amounts of Hyaluronic acid can be found inside the eyeball? This is called the vitreous humor and is made up almost completely of hyaluronic acid. The HA gives the fluid inside the eye an oil like property. If we use the machinery analogy again the oil acts as a shock protector for the eye also delivering nutrients.

So What about Extra Health Benefits?

This is the fascinating part as some studies have shown HA can be a great treatment for both the miseries of Osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis particularly when it?s injected. One research project found more than 80 per cent of individuals had wonderful relief from arthritis for up to a single year before another injection was required!

Tell Us About the Cosmetic Side?

Those cosmetic products containing HA are claiming to hydrate the skin. This gives it a much smoother and radiant glow making people feel much better about themselves. But there?s a lot more as recent clinical studies have discovered. HA can actually help wounds heal much more quickly and improve the appearance of both old and new scars.

There are products called injectible HA fillers like Restylane, and these are used to lessen the appearance of any sagging skin. Depressions in the skin caused by things like acne and injury can also benefit from the qualities of HA. It?s important to remember HA does eventually become fully absorbed into the body, and so any cosmetic or even medical treatment won?t be permanent. It should however, last for around nine months.

TAKE A LOOK AT THIS: ic.steadyhealth.com/hyaluronic_acid_injections.html

So How Can We Take HA?

Well HA can be administered successfully via an injection but if look around health stores, drug stores and even online you?ll find HA may be available as an oral supplement. It may however, take two to four months for benefits to be fully felt. Then it?s advisable to start decreasing the dose. Hyaluronic acid has undergone a natural enzyme cleaning technique resulting in much better absorption. Whether ingested as a pill it is able to enter joint tissue more easily is not fully understood as yet.

There is little doubt HA has a huge part to play in various conditions, but of course new things are being discovered about the acid with each passing day. You now know we have this present in our body and can?t properly function without it. All supplements must be taken with caution and on the right advice. It?s best to take in more reading on the topic and there?s quite a bit out there on the internet.

HA is valuable and so is your health!

This is the Modem World Bring It On, Sony Please

The Wii U launch sort of came and went, didn't it? I mean, it's a nice console, but it certainly didn't cause any major waves. In fact, Nintendo only sold 57,000 units in January. For those who don't track game console sales numbers -- and why would you -- that's bad. Very bad.

The Wii U, at least so far, has underwhelmed consumers. There isn't a killer application just yet, and despite some interesting innovation with the touchscreen controller, no one is sitting in his living room, staring at an empty space in his entertainment rack, thinking, "You know what I need? A Wii U."

And now we're all waiting so see what Sony does with the PlayStation 4. Rumors are that they'll do what Sony always does: Pack a ton of technology into a package that will be expensive -- but cost less than it should -- in order to get early adopters on board. It's actually possible that by the time this column is posted, Sony will have already released details about its upcoming hardware and you're too busy oohing and ahhing about frame rates and visual controllers.
