Anti-Bacterial Soaps: No Benefits and Unnecessary Risks | NC BEA ...

Have you noticed that antibacterial soaps are everywhere and even found in many toothpastes if you read the fine print (this gives a whole new meaning to wash your mouth out with soap).? Most people do not realize that bacteria are EVERYWHERE and on EVERYTHING.? Are you one of those people that washes there hands incessently, and are afraid everytime someone sneezes in your presence? Are you affraid of touching things in public places out of fear of infection? This fits the definition of a germaphobe. There is little to NO proof that antibacterial soaps you buy at the drugstore actually kill the dangerous microbes like S. Aureus or E. Coli.? Many experts say trying to live in disinfected sanitized bubble is bad for your health.? They believe that too much sanitization will weaken your immune system and in turn create dangerous superbugs that are resistant to antibiotics!? In addition a study done at UC Davis found that antibacterial CHEMICALS can alter hormonal activity in rats and human cells and in addition these antibacterial chemicals go down the drain into our waterways damaging wildlife, and then end up in our drinking water posing yet another health risk.? Is this worth it?? Even warnings from scientists have gone unheard in the antibacterial market place.? The most commonly used antimicrobial agent is TRICLOSAN. The antimicrobial industry has grown to a 1 billion dollar a year business. From the?FDA (food and drug administration) and also the AMA (American medical association) they state that antimicrobial soaps are no more effective at preventing infections than plain old regular soap.? So the promise of antibacterial soaps is a failed promise and we flush those chemicals down the drain into our water supply causing environmental problems.? Is this worth it? A study using store bought antibacterial soap and a standard strain of E. Coli found it took 2 hours of being in contact with the toxic soap before the bacteria was killed.? I don?t know about you but I sure don?t spend 2 hours washing my hands.? In fact the average person spend 5-10 seconds washing there hands.? So if antimicrobial soaps are no better than just plain old regular soap at preventing infection then why use them? Grayson Blom, B.Sc., D.C. Upper Cervical Chiropractic Specialist5975 Overland? AT&T 4G LTE adds Galaxy Note 2, Galay Tab 2 10.1, Galaxy Express and Galaxy Rugby Pro to lineup

AT&T 4G LTE adds Galaxy Note 2, Galay Tab 2 101, Galaxy Express and Galaxy Rugby Pro

Of the four big US carriers, AT&T's always been a solid go-to for variety across its wireless product portfolio. And today, the operator's welcoming a gaggle of Android devices from Samsung to bolster its 4G LTE offerings. Headlining this galactic quartet is the Galaxy Note II, the company's 5.5-inch phablet sequel which, though previously announced, has yet to receive a solid ship date. Also sharing that spotlight is an actual tablet, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and two new smartphones: the Galaxy Express and Galaxy Rugby Pro. While that latter handset is a mere update to the rugged, water-, shock- and dust-proof OG Rugby Smart, the Express is a 4.5-inch ICS device that reps a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU and considerable 2,000mAh battery. All are said to be arriving within the "coming months" which, in non-PR garble, should translate to a pre-holiday release. Check out the official presser after the break.

Brazilian Woman, Auctions Virginity To Help Poor

Talk about virgin air. A 20-year-old Brazilian woman is auctioning off her virginity for a one-time tryst on an airplane, reports say.

To make the skies even friendlier, Catarina Migliorini says she'll donate some of the money to provide housing for poor families in her native Santa Catarina in southern Brazil.

The Internet bidding reached $160,000 Friday afternoon. The auction ends Oct. 15.

Migliorini insisted in a statement to the Sao Paulo daily Folha that she is not a hooker and still believes in love. "For me, it's not prostitution," she said. "When someone does something once in his or her life, this is not considered a profession. If you take a picture and it comes out good, you are not a photographer because of it."

But there are some eyebrow-raising aspects to her venture. The Daily Mail reported that Migliorini is having sex for the first time as part of an Australian film project called "Virgins Wanted." She's getting $20,000 and a 90-percent cut of the auction price. The documentary also features a male virgin named Alex Stepanov, who received a $1,300 bid on Friday.

It wasn't clear how much Migliorini would donate to what she said would be an NGO. She said in the paper that she wanted to see the world and make a difference, claiming that she was not a hypocrite and would keep some of the money. She plans to study medicine in Argentina.

The winning bidder will be checked out for STDs (a condom is still mandatory), and they'll do the deed aboard a private flight from Australia to the United States. Somehow that avoids prostitution laws, she said in the Folha article.

Facebook users who have read the story have their own opinions about the nature of her rendezvous:

"Pure prostitution, nothing more," Heris Dominguez wrote in Portuguese that required no translation.

Emile Rodriguez wrote: "She doesn't have the capacity to land a good job, and so after this money ends, which man is going to want to marry or have a relationship with her? Your future is as a sex worker. You're already in training."

Fabricio Eduardo took a more positive view. "I support her. She's doing a right thing."

Of course, there's the nagging issue of whether the 20-year-old is really a virgin. The average age for Brazilians losing their virginity is 16.5 years old, just behind the United States world-leading average of 16.4, according to published research. Migliorini said she'll prove it with a test.

And, by the way, the actual sex won't be filmed. The documentary covers her life before and after the big moment. "This is not ----," she explained. "Otherwise I would die of shame."

Rare Disease Science Challenge- Your Call to Action!

If you or a loved one is unlucky enough to be affected by a rare disease then it can be a continued uphill struggle. Your doctor will likely never have seen a case before which means you suffer with symptoms while awaiting diagnosis, and this can sometimes take years. Even when an accurate diagnosis is reached there may be few treatment options; the pharmaceutical companies just aren t interested in developing drugs to treat such a small market. For the majority (>95%) of the 7000 rare diseases there is no FDA approved therapy. Perhaps the cruelest twist of rare diseases, however, is that so many of the patients are young children. The NIH estimates that 50% of rare diseases affect children, and 30% of pediatric cases die before they reach their 5th birthday!

Collectively rare diseases are not rare. The fact is that while a disease might be labeled as rare , the number of persons suffering from one of the thousands of rare diseases is estimated at 10% of the population [1], or approx. 30 million people in the United States and 350 million people globally. Mainstream pharmaceutical companies have long ignored rare diseases. With the increasing de-centralization of scientific research, and the growth of the citizen science movement, however, there has never been a better time to tackle this problem head on. That s exactly what Assay Depot is doing by teaming up with the Rare Genomics Institute ? to bring awareness to the current broken system for diagnosing, treating and curing rare diseases.

The Rare Genomics Institute provides hope to children suffering with a rare disease. Most rare diseases are genetic in nature, caused by a mutation somewhere in the 3.2 billion bases of human DNA. The Rare Genomics Institute uses crowdfunding to pay for sequencing of the sick child s genome and then assembles a network of academic specialists who work together to identify the child s genetic mutation. Now Assay Depot has teamed up with The Rare Genomics Institute to take the process one-step farther, and go on the offensive with the Rare Disease Science Challenge.

The competition is open to researchers, foundations, or everyday people. Families with a child afflicted with a rare disease will have the opportunity to work with a network of academic researchers and use donated research services to develop research proposals tailored to their child?s needs. An expert panel of scientists will evaluate the research proposals with the final winner(s) selected by Facebook voting.

If we can improve the standard of care for just one rare disease we will bring relief to thousands of people, very likely children, who currently suffer. We think that is a dream worth fighting for. I am sure Chris and Hugh Hempel would agree. Their identical twin daughters, Addison and Cassidy, have been diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Type C, a rare, incurable and fatal genetic disease that causes progressive neurological deterioration. This week Global Genes, the leading rare and genetic disease patient advocacy organizations in the world, with the Kauffman Foundation is screening the Hempels story in Hollywood and revealing the grim truth; that diagnosing, treating and curing rare disease is moving at a tedious pace, and leaving heart-rending personal accounts in its path.

How can you help?

If you work for a company that offers research services or makes lab consumables, reagents or instruments ask them to get involved. The great thing about sponsorship is that it will cost your company very little, we re not asking for money, just a donation of time or resources. Does your company make antibodies? How about donating some production capacity? Do you sell DNA sequencers, or mass spec instruments? Could you run some samples in your lab for us?

If you put your mind to it there are a multitude of ways your company could get involved for very little cost, and in return get some great publicity, and help a very worthy cause.

For the rest of you please help publicize the Rare Disease Science Challenge, post it, blog it, tweet it, let s do everything we can to get the word out, and be a part of the solution.

Akin: Mo. Sen. McCaskill less 'ladylike' in 2012

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin says that Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill wasn't very "ladylike" in their recent debate in the Missouri Senate race.

Akin claimed Thursday that McCaskill thinks he has a good shot at winning election. He cited as evidence the fact that McCaskill "came out swinging" during their first debate last week.

Akin contrasted that with McCaskill's demeanor during her 2006 debates against then-Sen. Jim Talent, when he said, quote: "She had a confidence, and was very much more sort of ladylike and all."

Akin's remark was denounced by Washington Sen. Patty Murray, who is chairwoman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. She called it "demeaning to women and offensive to all."

Considerations when investing for retirement ? Tax Talk

Issued by Watt Communications on behalf of Marriott Asset Management

The ability to predict the future with a high degree of certainty is the most critical feature of any retirement plan. An investor saving for retirement will want to know that they are saving enough to be able to sustain a desired lifestyle at their future retirement age, and a retired investor will need to know that their pension or annuity income will last into the future.

In a market with over 900 unit trusts and numerous product providers, it is difficult to make meaningful and accurate predictions when consolidating all the available information. Whilst it may seem prudent to spread investments into a pool of different balanced portfolios across multiple managers, this action compounds the problem. The reality is that trying to predict the future will become infinitely more difficult each time a new fund is added. Furthermore, an exclusive focus on capital price will ultimately subject an investor to the vagaries of the markets and a future that could be quite different from the original plan or expectation.

A greater focus on the income produced by an investment gives one the necessary information to plan more effectively for the future. A characteristic of the income element of an investment is that it is far less subject to market volatility. There are certain companies that will continue to produce both reliable and growing income regardless of global slowdowns, exchange rate volatility and declining interest rates. It is this fundamental that allows Marriott to predict an investor?s future with a high degree of certainty.

The recent launch of the Marriott Retirement Annuity has given Marriott the ability to answer the pre-retirement investor?s question today ? what will my pension be when I retire? When transferring an investment into, or making a new investment in the Marriott Retirement Annuity, the online investment tool will be able to demonstrate not only the income currently generated by that investment, but will also reflect a reasonable expectation of the monthly income and capital value upon that investor?s chosen retirement date. This is based on the principle that Marriott only invests in reliable income streams, and that it is growth in income, and the re-investment of that income, that ultimately drives capital value growth. This information will allow the investor to make investment decisions that are well informed, and to make additional contributions or defer retirement should they require more income. This, we believe, is the essence of a financial plan.

When an investor retires and wishes to draw the expected pension or annuity, they may do so by transferring seamlessly into Marriott?s living annuity, the Perpetual Annuity, which is a product designed to pay the annuity from the income produced by the underlying securities rather than the capital itself. By retaining the companies and instruments the investor had in their retirement annuity, fluctuations in prices, or market declines around retirement will not impact the pension or annuity the investor will earn at that time. Because the income is reliable, and the investor remains invested in the same underlying instruments, price changes will have no impact on the income produced by the portfolio. And therein lie the two keys ? a market decline at or near retirement age will not affect the value of a pension earned by a Marriott investor. By not funding their annuity from capital, but rather sustainable and growing income, the annuity or pension will last.

DeMistifying the Cloud | BriteCore? Insurance Processing System

Adapting to the New World

Few people would disagree that the business world changed when Henry Ford perfected the assembly line concept in 1913. The manufacturers who adopted this new process thrived, while those who clung to the traditional ways of doing business slowly faded away. ?Likewise, companies today face a similar decision concerning the adoption of new technology. The 21st century has been called the Age of Information and technological advancements are sure to change the way we live for years to come.

Two of the most dynamic advancements in technology in the last several years have been cloud computing and the virtually unlimited access to information through the Internet. Just as the assembly line hurtled our country forward in the production of automobiles, textiles, and other products, these technologies have rapidly advanced the flow and availability of information.

What is ?The Cloud??

Simply defined, the cloud is a collection of servers, typically housed in secure data warehouse facilities throughout the world. These servers can be accessed from any device in any location, as long as that device has an internet connection.

For many businesses, the traditional model of data storage involved the physical hosting of data on a server located in their office and maintained by onsite information technology professionals. If you and your peers decided to move all of your individual physical servers to one central location, your collection of servers would, in essence, form a portion of the cloud.

Every day many of us use web-based software products available through cloud computing. If you?ve accessed your medical records online or used Google applications, online banking, or done online shopping, you?ve used the cloud.

Business Benefits of Cloud Computing

Cloud computing offers businesses of all sizes the technology infrastructure benefits typically found only in large companies. A few of the benefits provided are listed below:

  • greater cost efficiency
  • scalability for growing businesses
  • remote work capability
  • data redundancy
  • disaster recovery

In today?s economy, every business seeks the most cost effective processes for their needs. Using web-based software solutions benefits companies by decreasing costs from many perspectives including utility costs, IT infrastructure, and software licensing fees.

Accessing hosted services also provides the benefit of allowing your business to scale needed IT infrastructure at a rate that falls directly in step with its growth, only paying for the level of resources you use. Many companies are utilizing Amazon?s EC2 allowing them to initiate a new server in seconds and only pay for the time and space used. The concept is similar to using shared utility resources in a city. When you need electricity, you simply plug in your appliance and turn it on. The electricity comes from a remote plant; you don?t have to generate it yourself. Since utilities are on a pay-as-you-go basis, you can use however much or little of the utility you need, but none of this would be possible if you weren?t sharing resources with the rest of the user community.

The cloud provides mobility, which is critical for today?s workforce. Consider how you accessed data from remote locations in the past. If you wanted to view your work files from home, you stored your data on hardware like a cd, flash drive, or external hard drive, then physically transported the hardware to your home. If your business uses web-based systems, you can access your data instantly from any location with an internet connection. This ability allows your staff to work remotely with ease.

Web-based business solutions are a key asset to business continuity planning, especially for small to midsize companies. If you?ve ever experienced loss of data and productivity due to a power surge, power outage, or natural disaster, you understand the value of data redundancy and disaster recovery. By using technology hosted in a secure data facility, you gain access to IT infrastructure with failover capability. Simply stated, your data resides on more than one server and will automatically re-route when needed thus reducing downtime and loss of productivity.

Is the Cloud Secure?

One of the biggest concerns preventing some companies from progressing to the cloud is the question of security in web-based systems. It isn?t difficult to find instances of security breaches in the news. No data storage system, whether located in your office filing cabinet or available in the cloud, can guarantee absolute security.

Security surrounding web-based processing is sophisticated on many levels. For comparison purposes, in a typical small office environment, security consists of a physical server in a locked room. An advanced security system in the same office might include an alarm system and restricted access to the server. In a cloud-based environment, security has to start at the data level and continue up through the operating system to the actual physical security of the data center hosting the systems. Data level security includes access controls, user-level authorization and verifying the integrity of the individual files and data included in the system. The physical security of the data center itself is critical to the overall security of your data. Amazon EC2 is a well respected hosting facility. In the Physical Security section of their online FAQs, they share a good example of how to secure machines:

AAWS data centers are housed in nondescript facilities, and critical facilities have extensive setback and military grade perimeter control berms as well as other natural boundary protection. Physical access is strictly controlled both at the perimeter and at building ingress points by professional security staff utilizing video surveillance, state of the art intrusion detection systems, and other electronic means. Authorized staff must pass two-factor authentication no fewer than three times to access data center floors. All visitors and contractors are required to present identification and are signed in and continually escorted by authorized staff.

In today?s modern business environment, it?s important to remember that security is everyone?s responsibility. Even though cloud providers are heavily invested in the privacy and security of data, change often brings with it uncertainty and fear of the unknown. Arming yourself with information about new technologies, like the cloud, and how they relate to your business will allow you to make informed decisions and strategically place your company in a leadership position.

Definitions

  • Cloud ? a network connection that gives you access to data stored in secure data warehouse centers all around the world (not stored on your computer).
  • Server ? a computer that processes requests and delivers data to other computers over a local network or the Internet.
  • Database ? a collection of information organized to provide efficient retrieval.
  • Data Center ? a highly secure facility that houses and maintains multiple servers and other [computer] components.
  • Hosting ? providing space on a server owned or leased for use by a company?s clients, as well as providing internet connectivity, typically in a data center.

Yahoo replaces CFO as CEO draws up turnaround plan

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is casting aside a cost-cutting specialist and bringing in software industry veteran Ken Goldman to be chief financial officer as the Internet company's management orchestrates a potentially expensive turnaround attempt.

The departure of CFO Tim Morse, announced Tuesday, isn't a shock. After joining a company, new CEOs often reshuffle senior executives while trying to assemble a management team that's better suited for a shift in direction.

But it usually takes six to nine months before an incoming CEO hires a new chief financial officer, said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis.

Mayer is replacing Morse just two months after Yahoo lured her away from Google Inc., suggesting that there may have been some friction between the two, Gillis said.

Morse, 43, will leave the company next month to make way for Goldman, who take over as CFO on Oct. 22. Yahoo didn't immediately disclose whether Morse will receive a severance package or reveal how much it is paying Goldman to leave his current job as CFO of Fortinet Inc., a maker of computer security software.

Since joining Yahoo in June 2009, Morse has spent much of his time pruning costs ? an endeavor that enabled the company to boost its profits even as its revenue has been drooping.

Although she hasn't yet shared her vision publicly, Mayer is believed to be focusing on steps designed to delight Yahoo's audience of 700 million worldwide users but not necessarily investors. As part of that process, Yahoo could pour more money into some products and remove some of the ads that clutter its Web pages to the exasperation of some users. She is sharing more of her vision with Yahoo employees in a series of meetings beginning this week.

"I think we can kiss (Yahoo's) increasing (profit) margins goodbye for a while," Gillis said.

Yahoo has declined to discuss Mayer's plans. The company says she will talk more extensively next month when the company reports its third-quarter results. A specific date for the earnings release hasn't been set.

The company's stock added 8 cents to $15.76 in Tuesday's extended trading after the CFO change was announced. Yahoo shares have been hovering between $15 and $16 through most of Mayer's brief tenure, reflecting Wall Street's uncertainty about what direction she intends to push the company.

Goldman, 63, has been in management for more than 30 years and has been a CFO with at least six other companies, including Fortinet, which is located about five miles from Yahoo's Sunnyvale, Calif., headquarters. He is perhaps best known as the CFO of Siebel Systems, where he worked for six years until the business software maker was sold to rival Oracle Corp. for $6.1 billion.

"Yahoo is an iconic brand with an incredibly strong business model and balance sheet," Goldman said in a statement. "I believe there is a lot of runway ahead for this business, and I look forward to working with Marissa and the rest of the executive team as we define Yahoo's future."

Goldman will have more cash to work with because of a complicated deal that Morse played a key role in negotiating. During the past two years, he helped broker a deal that culminated in Yahoo selling half of its 40 percent stake in one of China's rising Internet stars, Alibaba Group. The $7.6 billion sale, including a revised technology licensing agreement, was completed last week.

After taxes, Yahoo anticipates a $4.3 billion windfall. The company plans to spend $3 billion of that buying back its stock, leaving another $1.3 billion for acquisitions or other investments.

Morse also filled a leadership gap at Yahoo after the abrupt firing of Carol Bartz as its CEO a year ago. Bartz had hired Morse to weed out expenses.

After Bartz's ouster, Morse served four months as Yahoo's interim CEO until the company hired Scott Thompson in January. Thompson lasted just four months before he stepped down amid an uproar about inaccurate information on his official biography.

Besides bringing in a new CFO, Mayer last month hired former Amazon.com Inc. executive Kathy Savitt as Yahoo's chief marketing officer.

Hoboken, NJ, September 25, 2012. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., and The Physiological Society have announced the renewal of their publishing partnership, building on over eight years of collaboration. The renewed partnership will ensure the society's titles, The Journal of Physiology and Experimental Physiology, continue to develop as thought leaders of physiological research.

"Since their establishment The Society's journals have built a reputation for excellence and quality," said Professor Jonathan Ashmore, President of The Physiological Society. "Over the last eight years this reputation has grown and our partnership with Wiley has helped to build on this."

Professor Ashmore continued, "Our journals already accommodate the needs of funders and research scientists around the world, offering an open access route for those who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers through Wiley's OnlineOpen option, and all our journal content becomes free to access after 12 months. Our renewed partnership with Wiley will ensure that the journals stay at the forefront of innovation in a time of rapid evolution in academic publishing."

"The renewal of Wiley's partnership with The Physiological Society allows us to build upon almost a decade of collaboration, with new initiatives that benefit both authors and readers of these prestigious journals," said Stephen M. Smith, President and CEO, Wiley. "Together we will continue to support and promote the latest world-class physiological research through sustained innovation using new delivery channels and models."

The Journal of Physiology publishes the latest research from across the discipline, with the aim of developing our understanding of the principles and mechanisms which govern our bodies. Published since 1879, the journal's international editorial board is led by Editor-in-Chief, Professor David Paterson of Oxford University, and currently holds an Impact Factor of 4.881.

Wiley has supported the journal's role as an opinion leader with new initiatives including the publication of dedicated neuroscience issues eight of which will be published in 2012.

Experimental Physiology, edited by Professor Paul McLoughlin of University College Dublin, focuses on emerging areas of physiological and pathophysiological research, with emphasis on molecular and cellular functions. The journal holds an impact factor of 3.211 and will move to online-only publication from 2013.

Under this renewed agreement The Physiological Society and Wiley will also collaborate closely on a number of new initiatives including Wiley's role as principal sponsor of the 2013 Union of Physiological Sciences Congress.

Life Sciences and IT Investing: More Like Nuts and Gum than ...

PEHub is reporting that limited partners are putting more resources into life sciences all of a sudden. The article is low on details but says several funds in the $200 million to $400 million size are being raised right now. I know most of our audience doesn?t care much about life sciences ? although you could argue anyone susceptible to death, disease, or aging (read: All of us, even you, Larry Ellison) should.

But the mini-trend is interesting in what it says about IT investing: absolutely nothing.

Typically there?s a resurgence in life sciences whenever IT investments slump. But I don?t think that?s the case this time. For one thing, there?s no evidence we?re in a slump ? there are a bevy of conflicting data points on the health of the startup ecosystem. If anything, the most negative naysayers are concerned that we aren?t yet seeing the psychological ripple effects of disappointing IPOs make their way to the private company world.

That?s not to say that a correction won?t be coming for all those angel deals that can?t get a series A, the series A companies that haven?t gotten enough traction for a follow on round. And an overall crush of valuations when members of the 2011 $1 billion valuation club set out to raise another round. But said carnage isn?t here yet.

If you want evidence of disappointment in the consumer Web, look to the resurgence in enterprise deals instead. In the intervening years between the March 2000 NASDAQ crash and whatever this thing is that we?re in now, it has become clear that investing in life sciences and tech are utterly different animals ? more so today than ever.?Decades from now when we look back on the venture capital business, I think we?ll be surprised that life sciences and tech investments were ever done out of the same funds, through the same partnerships, and under the same roofs.

Two things have changed the businesses forever: The Internet and the playbook of big pharma.

Back in the days when Silicon Valley actually made, you know, Silicon, companies couldn?t go from idea to IPO at light speed. Tech IPOs, when they occurred, were small and companies grew the longer they were in the market. It was a totally different game. It?s similar to those opening weekend box office records that get gaudier and gaudier as the film business has changed, moving away from long runs based on reviews and word-of-mouth to huge opening weekend mega-plex pushes on as many screens as possible before the reviews come out. Far more screens and higher ticket prices are why there are such bigger opening box office weekends today ? not because the movies are any better. The film industry essentially hacked its way around reviews.

Similarly, the Internet hacked its way around the normal laws of building a tech company. It?s dramatically faster and cheaper to get a product into market, and the delivery is mostly direct to consumers, not shelves of stores or networks of distributors. But there?s a downside: It?s feast or famine. The days of the small IPO are gone, as most Internet companies go very, very big or sell quickly. When it comes to tech, venture capital has become even more of a home run business.

But it?s not just that the speed and size of the consumer Web has become more distinct from the long-time horizons and uncertainty of drug discovery. Life sciences, too, has changed in the last decade, pulling hard in the other direction. Amgen and Genentech were supposed to be the future for this field, the first two ? of many ? massive publicly traded drug discovery companies. But instead, the industry en masse opted to do the research equivalent of the acqui-hire: Rather than take on the risk of expensive clinical trials and uncertainty when it comes to the FDA and insurance coverage, biotech companies do licensing deals with big pharma early and often.

You can understand why. Consider Tysabri, a multiple sclerosis wonder drug that was expected to become a blockbuster until sales were suddenly suspended in 2005 with warning of new potential side effects. It took more than a year to come back on the market and has only recently won clearance to modify its label, which investors hope could double sales over the next year. This was a seven-year battle that could have murdered a small company like Elan, had it not partnered up with the giant Biogen to develop and market the drug together.

But with a decision to share the risk comes a decision to share the spoils. Elan may only now be able to reap the benefits for Tysabri ? and it only gets half of them.

There are few signs of this trend waning: VCs love it, because taking a small unprofitable biotech company public to fund ongoing research is all but impossible, and they aren?t going to carry it the whole way. Entrepreneurs love it, because they can get rewarded for initial discovery and don?t have to build out the testing, approval, and sales infrastructure from scratch. And big pharma really loves it, because they effectively outsource early drug research.

The picture for returns, when it comes to life sciences, couldn?t be more different than the consumer Web: No highs, but a steady track record with few lows either.

Investing in the two areas has always taken a different passion and knowledge base. But increasingly it?s just a completely different business with different risk profiles, investment expectations and fund cycles ? about as similar as private equity and venture capital. And as Web-focused venture firms fall under pressure to do seed programs and help with recruiting and other high touch services, the two will become even more distinct. (And some would argue cleantech is a third animal with its reliance on subsidies and long-lead market lead times.)

People will cite programs like the incubator RockHealth, funded by many IT investors, as evidence that there?s still some synergy there. But no one at RockHealth is doing medical devices or drug discovery. They?re building things like iPhone apps that sell into the healthcare world. That?s a tech investment that happens to be in the healthcare vertical, not a life sciences deal.

Firms still doing it under one roof will argue there?s instant diversification for LPs. But that?s the LPs? job. The synergies are getting harder and harder to see.

Who needs a car head unit when you have a Galaxy S III?

SGS3 Dashboard

Looking for something to replace that lackluster 8-Track, cassette, or CD player that came with your car? Instead of using some goofy adapter or FM transmitter, why not replace the entire unit with a Samsung Galaxy S III?

That was the train of thought for Steve, aka youtube user philstuffs. He had an old JVC head unit that just wasn't cutting it. So instead of spend the money on a stand-alone head unit for his vehicle, he used his trusty SGS3. He modified a standard car charger so the phone charges when the car is on and he hooked up the audio-out from his phone to the amplifier in his trunk. Simple and effective.

Before you get on his case for the phone not being centered, he knows this. He states in his youtube video description that he still needs to come up with a "prettier facia" and is even thinking about using fiberglass.

What I want to know is: How does he take the phone with him when he leaves the vehicle? From the looks of it, that facia he cooked up is removable, and he can unhook his SGS3 and be on his way. Not the most practical solution. Maybe his final design will be more practical and user friendly.

Would you replace your entire head unit with your smartphone? How do you listen to music from your phone in your car? Let us know in the comments. Video after the break.

Candidates fight for working-class voters in ads

(AP) ? The presidential candidates are criticizing each other in new television commercials aimed at winning working-class voters who could help swing the election, pitting Republican Mitt Romney's wealth against the loss of American jobs to China on President Barack Obama's watch.

As Romney dispatched running mate Paul Ryan to kick off a three-day bus tour in the critical battleground of Ohio, Obama began running an ad in the state trying to use his GOP rival's own words against him.

It's the campaign's first spot using Romney's comments that 47 percent of voters pay no income tax, and believe they are victims and entitled to government assistance. The 30-second ad also points out that Romney paid just 14.1 percent in federal taxes last year on $13.7 million in income and refuses to release his returns before 2010.

"Maybe instead of attacking others on taxes, he should come clean on his," the ad says.

Romney is trying to shift the debate off his personal wealth and private comments to donors to worker resentment over jobs moving to China. His new ad released Monday is his latest salvo in a string of criticism against Obama's handling of the rising Asian power.

The commercial showed a photo of a shuttered factory and says fewer Americans are working as China steals the country's ideas and technology. "Obama had years to stand up to China. We can't afford four more," the spot concludes.

Six weeks out from the election, Obama holds a slim lead over Romney in most battleground states. The Republican is seeking to right his campaign following a rough stretch that included the release of his secretly recorded remarks about the 47 percent and criticism that he's not campaigning hard enough for the White House.

Romney acknowledged Sunday that he was trailing the president in several key states. But he promised to spend less time courting donors and more time with voters.

"I know that in the coming six weeks they're very unlikely to stay where they are today," Romney said of the polls.

The Republican was scheduled to campaign Monday in Colorado, where aides added a rally in an attempt to deflect the criticism from within his own party. Romney was to join Ryan in Ohio on Tuesday for the final two days of bus tour.

Obama will spend Monday and Tuesday tending to official duties at the United Nations. But his condensed schedule at the annual gathering of world leaders underscored that his focus is largely on the campaign.

Voters in more than two dozen states are already casting ballots in early voting for the presidential election, meaning everything the candidates do now could influence votes already being cast.

The Best Guide When It Comes To Having A Home Based Business ...

Most people have thought about the possibilities available to them if they ran a successful home business. Running your own home business allows you flexibility other jobs don?t have. Most people never make it from the dreaming stage to the execution. Follow these tips if you are serious about starting your own business.

A basic website serves most home based businesses, so make sure to spend a little extra on beta testing of the website you design or have created. You should design your site to be browser-friendly on all available formats, such as mobile devices, and try to make your information follow similar formats on all devices. Verifying your website?s accessibility across multiple platforms will ensure that you don?t miss out on any potential customers just because they use a different browser than you do.

TIP! Check into the backgrounds of any potential employees who you want to hire for your home business. Your employees should be experienced in the area of your business, or else your business could fail.

Be sure that you can portray what your business does within a business objective, usually composed within one or two sentences. You should state exactly what your goals are with your business and what it is about. Be sure to explain what makes your company unique and its goals in these sentences.

Pay attention to your own personal health when it comes to your office environment by investing in comfortable and ergonomic equipment. If you have to strain your body in any way, it will be uncomfortable and you may damage your body permanently. Spend a good amount of money on your desk chair if you spend a lot time of sitting in it. You should also invest in ergonomic lighting, mouse, mouse pad, keyboard and anything else that you use on a regular basis. Spending about $200 on this will help a lot.

TIP! Laughter is the best medicine. Laughing will help to you stay calm, feel joy and happiness, and even give your respiratory system a boost.

Including an option for viewers to sign up for your mailing list on your website. Make sure that the mailing list sign up option is on every single page. This way visitors to your site will have a number of chances to enter their contact info.

It can be extremely easy to become engulfed by work when you work from home. This is why you need to set a specific place where you do all of your work. As the day comes to an end, take some time off that?s not spent working, such as time with your family and friends.

Don?t be unrealistic about what you expect to get out of your home business. Is there value and longevity to your product or service? Can you succeed in the business as an honest businessman or businesswoman?

TIP! It is important that you remain employed during the early stages of your new business. New businesses generally take awhile to start generating profits, so stay employed at your current job if possible.

Home business owners are all over the Internet. Check out and research internet communities such as forums or message boards, and include both ones dedicated to your particular niche or outside your area of expertise. You never know where your next big idea may come from, and reading about what other people have experienced can help you out, even if they are in a different field that you are.

Make sure that you always dress for success. When you work out of a home office, you may feel like wearing your jammies. If you want to succeed, put in the effort and dress as you would if you were working at any other job. This makes you feel more professional so you?re as productive as you can be.

As you can see, it will require a little bit of work and dedication to make the jump. If you can manage to pull through and stick to the plan, you will be able to accurately represent your dream in the company?s image and create something that is long-lasting and profitable over the years.
